Back to reality with a bump in May

After monthly growth rates of 4, 7, 12 and 3 % over the last four months of 2020, the supply dropped by more than 7 % in May. With just 559 000 tonnes for the EU-28, we have to go back to 2015 to find such a lean month of May. Not one origin group was spared, with dollar bananas down by 6 %, the ACPs by 13 % and European production by 14 %. Among the major origins, only Ecuador, Panama and Belize registered a positive growth rate, of 10%, 3% and 25 % respectively. Colombia and Costa Rica dropped by 9 %. The African supply came undone, with Côte d’Ivoire down by 16 %, Cameroon by 20 % and Ghana by 20 %. The same trend was seen for the Dominican Republic, which registered a fall of 9 %. Over the first five months, the net supply was 2 991 000 tonnes, a figure which thanks to the good previous dynamic remained higher than in 2019 (+ 3 %). Over twelve months, the positive dynamic was maintained, with a gain of 1 % to 6 558 000 tonnes.
