A deteriorating market

The market conditions distinctly deteriorated in January. Brazil quickly wound down its Kent campaign, supplying only modest quantities of Tommy Atkins, Keitt and Palmer. The deteriorating sales conditions were mainly due to the massive increase in shipments from Peru, which led to stocks forming, combined with ebbing demand. The predominance of small sizes, less sought-after by the supermarket sector, distinctly accelerated the fall in rates. This fruit sold at low prices between 2.00 and 3.00 euros/box, while the big sizes, under-represented in the Peruvian supply, were valued at much higher price levels. In the last week of the month, a slight improvement in sales conditions was perceptible, insofar as the imbalance in terms of sizing observed since the beginning of the campaign was fading. The bigger proportion of large sized and medium sizes helped prices for less abundant small sizes strengthen. The implementation of promotions by supermarket chains supported this price trend.

The air-freight market remained fickle throughout the month, with some weeks characterised by high rates and others with wide price differences for produce of good quality overall. In the first half of the month, the disappearance of the substantial quantities from Brazil opened up the way for Peruvian produce. The variable volumes shipped by Peru influenced sale prices, generating considerable differences. The marketing of satisfactory quality fruit at aggressive prices by certain operators resulted in increasing commercial tension, and thereby in a dip in rates. While market prices settled at between 4.50 and 5.00 euros/kg, sales made at around 4.00 euros/kg or even lower (3.60 euros/kg) weighed down on all transactions.
