Quarterly Market Review

Sweet potato

The white-fleshed sweet potato supply in Q4 2019 was provided by Egypt, Brazil, Guatemala and Honduras. The latter two origins, better known for their orange-fleshed sweet potatoes, seem to have developed their white-fleshed sweet potato production. Sales in October and November have been fairly high in recent years, and then down in December. Egyptian produce, apparently scarcer than in previous years, sold steadily albeit with a dip at the end of the year, though with higher average prices, more rarely below 1.00 euro/kg. Brazilian produce sold on the same price footing as Central American produce, with a slump at the end of the year.

The orange-fleshed sweet potato market was more even, with big incoming shipments from Spain, Honduras and Guatemala. The rate dipped slightly over time. Volumes were swelled by the arrival of sweet potatoes from Portugal, generally offered at more modest prices of around 1.00 euro/kg.

Yam

The market was quiet for Ghanaian yams. Incoming shipments subsided from mid-November, which meant that prices were revised. The end-of-year festivities also invigorated sales due to greater consumption by ethnic populations, who maintain their attachment to particular dietary habits. Mid-November brought the start of the French-produced yam trading campaign, with more moderate shipments than the previous year. Their rates settled on the same footing as in 2018, at around 3.80 euros/kg, and dipping to around 3.50 euros/kg. French production this year seemed smaller in terms of volume, but also of more fragile quality. Meanwhile, Brazil supplied limited quantities of Cuscus yams. They sold steadily at an average price of 1.75 euro/kg, with a temporary increase at the very end of the year of around 1.80 euro/kg, or even 1.90 euro/kg.

Cassava

The market maintained a downward trend throughout the period in question, albeit of limited extent. This trend can be explained by the return of normal supply levels in the face of static demand.

Eddoe

Q4 2019 saw little change for Costa Rican eddoes, with rates continuing along the same lines as in September. Conversely, prices proved to be much better than at the same time in 2018, when they settled at around 2.00 euros/kg. The definitely more restrained supply level was the main reason for this.

Ginger

The market was fairly strong for the Brazilian and Chinese ginger. The rate of 1.50 euro/kg registered at the beginning of the period strengthened, and stabilised in early November at above 2.00 euros/kg. This market trend can doubtless be attributed to a reduction in Chinese shipments, due to a dip in production, but also to livelier domestic demand.
