Heavy market then stabilized

Over the last two weeks of June, the mango market remained heavy, given the continuation of the conditions registered in the second half of May. The accumulation of Ivorian, Malian and also Dominican and Brazilian shipments saturated the market, while demand was more focused on seasonal fruits. This proliferation of origins, varieties (Kent, Keitt, Palmer, Tommy Atkins) and qualities aggravated the difficult sales conditions. In the middle of the month, the trend altered because of reduced availability from Côte d'Ivoire and Mali, whose trading seasons were winding down. Brazil also eased back its shipments simultaneously, enabling a better supply/demand balance. Mango rates recovered distinctly, while Senegal embarked on its campaign, and took over from the other West African origins. With the market finding a degree of balance, the price stabilised throughout the second half of the month. However, a new slowdown in demand pointed to tougher sales conditions for July, given a progressing supply from Senegal, whose campaign was set to be more normal than the previous one, which had been less abundant.

The air-freight mango market followed the reverse trend to that of the sea-freight mango, with rather favourable conditions at the beginning of the period, characterised by a relative supply trough. Mexican shipments gradually replaced those from West Africa, and the residual quantities from Peru. But the exponential progression of the Mexican supply in the second half of the month droves rates downward. The predominance of small sizes, not always suited to demand, accentuated the downward trend - reaching the product profitability threshold at some moments toward the end of the month. It was only at the very end of the month that the first batches arrived from Senegal, whose sea-freight campaign had already started several weeks previously.
