The 2022 hurricane season started in the North Atlantic on 1 June and is expected to be very active according to NHC forecasts, similar to 2021. 14 to 21 storms are expected (average 1991-2020: 14.4) with 6 to 10 potentially becoming hurricanes (average 7.2), including 3 to 6 classified as "major" hurricanes. The high activity forecast for this season is attributed to several climatic factors, including the ongoing La Niña phenomenon that is expected to persist throughout the hurricane season, warmer-than-average surface temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, and weaker Atlantic tropical trade winds, and an enhanced West African monsoon. The official cyclone season runs from 1 June to 30 November, with peak activity expected from August to October.
