Argentinean pears

In Argentina, the pear harvest season started on 18 December. Argentina is the world's second-largest exporter of pears with 330,000 tonnes of pears compared to 500,000 tonnes ten years ago. This drop is linked to the increase in production costs and changes in varieties. If Europe was its first market, this is no longer the case today; pears are now destined for North America and Latin America. Russia has become its second market. Europe absorbs 15 to 20% of pear exports. Williams is its leading exported pear, followed by Packhams, Beurré d'Anjou and Abate Fetel. The Williams harvest began on 8 and 9 January in the Rio Negro region and on 9 and 10 January in the Mendoza region. The last pear harvests are expected to take place around 19 March.
