Difficult market

The mango market remained tricky in December. On top of the big tonnages arriving from Brazil, from the second half of the month came rapidly rising volumes from Peru, embarking on its campaign early. The price gaps remained wide for Brazilian Kent, according to the quality of fruit received. Rates for Keitt from the same origin were set at a lower level, with customers favouring Kent. In addition Keitt, and to a lesser degree Kent, suffered from variable quality which hindered sales aimed at the supermarket sector (black spoilage). The prices stated below are for sales of satisfactory quality fruit - some batches were sold at lower prices. The start of the Peruvian campaign also contributed to saturating the market, in a context of fairly quiet demand, although it did pick up during the festive period, helping rates to hold up. Peruvian mangos traded at a high price level, given the start-of-campaign effect and this origin’s fruit often being more coloured than its Brazilian counterparts. Conversely, the Peruvian supply primarily comprised small sizes in the first shipments, leaving a sales niche for the larger-sized Brazilian mangos.

The air-freight mango market was also tricky, with large volumes from Brazil and Peru clashing throughout the month. Demand remained moderate due to the high sale prices, especially for Peruvian fruit, subjected to high freight costs. Apart from sales for the end-of-year festivities in weeks 50 and 51, the merchandise maintained near-cost price levels.
