Moroccan strawberries

In Morocco, the strawberry season started slowly in November and accelerated thereafter. The strawberry should be present until mid-February on the export markets. In Kenitra, strawberries, raspberries and blueberries are mainly destined for export. Production is spread out from November to mid-March in the Gharb plain. The region of Rabat-Salé-Kénitra occupies the first place with 4,360 ha of red fruits including 2,400 ha of strawberries, 1,200 ha of blueberries, 700 ha of raspberries and 60 ha of other types of berries. Yields reach 35-45 tonnes per ha for strawberries, 10-25 tonnes per ha for blueberries and 10-15 tonnes per ha for raspberries.

75% of the strawberries are exported, 25% of which are fresh strawberries and 50% frozen strawberries, while blueberries represent 95% followed by raspberries with 90% to 30 foreign destinations, mainly the European market. Exports are increasing every year with the presence of Spanish companies in the Kenitra region, and now whole lorries leave for European countries. It should be noted that since

1 January 2022, new customs regulations have come into force in the context of Brexit. Everything that comes in must be cleared through customs, which causes long delays in carrying out controls that are detrimental to the freshness of red fruit.
