The world market for easy-peelers: dynamic, mainly linked to the summer market

Citrus fruits are among the most traded fruits in the world, with a market estimated at 15 million tonnes in 21/22. With 4.8 million tonnes exported during the 2021-22 season, easy-peelers alone represent 33% of the world's citrus market. However, this family of citrus fruits, together with lemons, still has a good dynamic within the world fruit trade. The volumes exported have returned to growth since 2018/19 (+850,000 tonnes in 5 years). The summer market in particular is now the scene of this growth in volumes. The proven popularity of late hybrids (Orri, Nardorcott, etc.) has enabled the southern hemisphere supplier to gain ground on the main markets, with these varieties with recognised organoleptic qualities replacing the ultra-early clementines. For example, US imports of small summer citrus, led by Chile, have grown by almost 73% since 2017-18. In Europe, imports of easy-peelers, mainly from South Africa, have jumped by 40% between 2017-18 and 2021-22. The winter market appears to be much more stable in terms of volumes. Nevertheless, there are movements of qualitative substitution in certain markets, with Morocco gaining market share in Russia against Turkey, thanks to its Nadorcott and clementines.
