On the upgrade

With 515 000 tonnes, the supply to the EU27+UK in January 2023 was up by 1.7 % on the same month in 2022. This is still a very long way off the record from January 2020, with 588 000 tonnes, yet given the relative paucity of the world supply, it was already some feat. Practically all the main origin categories contributed to this bounce-back, with the African ACP group leading the way (in percentage terms), with a 5.6 % rise. EC production meanwhile gained 3.8 %, thanks to the Canaries. Meanwhile the dollar origins registered a fine growth of 2.5 %. Only the non-African ACPs lost ground, and in considerable proportions (- 17.8 %), with the Dominican Republic and Belize dragging down the trend. Nonetheless, over twelve months, the European market (ex-EU28) saw a big drop of 3.7 %, slipping back to 6 340 000 tonnes.
