Mango monthly review: June 2023

In June, the mango market remained relatively balanced, with fairly stable sale prices. However the supply was less homogeneous than in recent months. Brazil quickly became the top supplier to the European market, its shipments combining with Dominican and Puerto Rican volumes. The West African campaign continued with leftover merchandise of more fragile quality, which led to widening price ranges as it sold. The first batches from Senegal brought back a Kent variety supply at the start of the period, initially with produce from Casamance shipped in limited quantities, and then from other parts of Senegal, as they gradually ramped up. In spite of competition from seasonal fruits, mango sales held up, albeit at a less intense tempo. Volumes of seasonal products, restrained due to the spring meteorological crises, as well as their high market prices, helped maintain significant mango sales.

The air-freight mango market had a more difficult time throughout the month, because of substantial shipments from Mexico and the dip in demand for the product. The irregular Mexican shipments temporarily led to stocks forming, and thereby a deterioration in merchandise quality. The implementation of promotions helped get the market moving slightly, though without clearing it. The top-up batches from the Dominican Republic and Senegal further complicated market conditions.
