Mango monthly review: March 2023

In March, the mango supply to the European market was largely dominated by Peruvian produce. The decrease in shipments from this origin was offset by the progressing Brazilian shipments. So the European market received regular shipments of around 400 containers per week. Demand remained stable and mainly active in this period right in the middle of the counter-season. Rates were steady and high, particularly in the second half of the month, with preparations for the Easter holidays marking a period of distinct improvement in mango market conditions as every year. Cyclone Yaku, which hit Peru in the middle of the month, caused logistical disruptions, but it does not seem to have had any adverse consequences on production. Brazilian production zones were also affected by heavy rainfall, raising fears of quality problems developing. Brazilian fruit expanded the varietal range available beyond Peruvian Kent. Brazil primarily exported Palmer in March, and to a lesser degree some Keitt and Tommy Atkins. This fruit took advantage of the subsiding shipments from Peru, and was valued at a practically equivalent price level.

The air-freight mango market was tougher in terms of supply. The weather disruption in Peru led to more irregular shipments. These variations had repercussions on placement, causing sale prices to strengthen. They peaked in the second half of March, just before the Easter holidays. At the end of the month, the market received the first mangos from Mali, with the Valencia variety. This produce was struggling to find a market slot in the face of the omnipresent Peruvian mangos.

The West African campaign should start in April - at the end of the first half-month for air-freight mangos, and at the end of the month for sea-freight mangos.
