Pineapple monthly review: May 2023

In May, the pineapple market had a twofold trajectory. Over the first three weeks, operators had some fears regarding placement of the fruit, because of the succession of public holidays. Some started to receive the first fruit from Costa Rica’s natural bloom. Nonetheless the market maintained a positive trend, since the supermarket sector continued its pineapple promotions. Conversely, the market conditions gradually tightened up thereafter. The market embarked on a downward phase, during which the Costa Rican supply continued to rise, while the demand was increasingly captured by a limited seasonal fruits supply charging fairly high prices.

The situation on the air-freight pineapple market was practically the same, with a fairly positive market trend over the first three weeks, and a situation which tightened up thereafter, as the seasonal fruit supply availability increased. Throughout the month, the Cayenne supply (Benin and Cameroon) was of fairly heterogeneous quality, which limited demand for the fruit and widened the price range. On the Sugarloaf market, Benin slightly strengthened its status as a reliable source of coloured fruit, although this fruit struggled to earn better value because of the lack of homogeneous coloration. The Sweet market remained fluid, albeit for sales relating to limited volumes only.

The Victoria market entered its summer phase fairly early, marked by slower sales due to demand switching to the seasonal fruits supply. The arrival in the latter half-month of more substantial volumes from Reunion tightened up market conditions, complicating placement of this fruit.
