Pineapple monthly review: October 2023

In October, the situation on the pineapple market gradually tensed up, as the Costa Rican supply increased. In the first half-month, the market went through a wait-and-see phase. For many of the operators involved in the Madrid Fruit Attraction show, the bulk of their activity consisted in keeping to their prior commitments. In the face of a rising supply and in the absence of promotions, the market started to lose vitality. From the start of the second half-month, the Costa Rican supply, without being excessive, weighed heavier on the market in the context of flat demand. The sales pressure was especially high since the supply was fairly imbalanced. Sizes 8 and 9, available in larger quantities, were placed at low prices, even by established brands. The fall in rates was more marked at the end of the month, because of the start of the All Saints holidays. The shipping delays due to the storms relieved the supply pressure, but without any major impact on the price falls.  

The air-freight pineapple market saw a mediocre trajectory. In the first half-month, it remained fluid although the supply was rising fairly significantly. In the second half-month, when availability was lower, the market was less fluid. The start of the All Saints’ holidays accentuated the lack of interest in the air-freight pineapple. The Cayenne supply, still affected by rains, exhibited fairly heterogeneous quality, especially from Cameroon. Livelier at the start of the month, the Sugarloaf market was also less fluid at the end of the month. The lack of coloration of Beninese fruit encouraged several operators to opt for Ghanaian fruit, more expensive but with more homogeneous coloration and better presented. Sweet sales remained quiet, despite the fairly limited volumes.

The Victoria supply did see a rise, in particular from Reunion. Mainly comprising large fruit (sizes 6 and 7), this supply was harder to sell, which caused the rates range to widen.
