End of the West African campaign, with demand shrinking

In June, the European mango market underwent an alteration in supply phase. This was a period marked by the winding down of the West African campaign (mainly Côte d’Ivoire and Mali). Mali continued its campaign beyond the final shipments from Côte d’Ivoire, aiding the transition to the first batches from Senegal received in the second half of the month. These origins provided the Kent supply. Meanwhile, the supply was topped up with other varieties (Tommy Atkins, Palmer and Keitt), by Brazil, the Dominican Republic, and to a lesser extent Puerto Rico and Guatemala. Demand shrank throughout the month in favour of seasonal produce, available in abundance and at attractive prices. The proliferation of origins, varieties and the qualitative heterogeneity of the fruit on the market contributed to making sales conditions harder. From a level of around 7.00-8.00 euros/box in May, mango prices dropped in June before stabilising at around 5.00-6.00 euros/box. Some end-of-season batches from West Africa sold at open prices given their unreliable quality.

The air-freight mango market saw a similar trend, with a more marked dip in rates. West African fruit sold on a footing of 3.00-4.00 euros/kg. The first batches from Senegal, better valued, saw their prices rapidly align with those of the other origins in place. Mexican mangos, after selling at higher prices at the beginning of the month, also saw a gradual drop in prices. The lack of demand, but also the fairly heterogeneous fruit quality (coloration and stage of maturity) doubtless led to this loss of momentum in prices.
