South African avocados are set to be allowed onto the Japanese market in the coming months, following on from China in mid-2023. The sanitary protocol was finalised in early January 2024 with the Tokyo authorities, enabling exports to start probably around June. Furthermore, talks on the opening of the Indian market also seem to be at a fairly advanced stage. This is a genuinely new strategic axis taking shape for the South African avocado industry. Given the abundance of the Peruvian supply to Europe, South African operators have already reshaped their presence on the Old Continent. In 2023, nearly two-thirds of total volumes were placed after and above all before the avalanche of Peruvian volumes. The Asian markets provide another option, with South Africa holding a key asset compared to Peru: logistics. The shipping time to reach most of the South-East Asian markets is a fortnight from Cape Town or Durban, while Peruvian fruit requires approximately twice that to reach those destinations.
