After heavy going since 2013, imports were back to full steam in 2016.

With more than 1.36 million tonnes, they were up by more than 10 % on 2015, and indeed beat the 2013 record. However, while the rouble picked up slightly, it remained very low against the dollar, and as has been the case since 2014, weighed down on the price of all imported products. Conversely, the banana continued to take advantage of its status as the cheapest fruit on the market for Russian consumers: with a retail price of 76 roubles/kg in 2016, as opposed to 91 roubles/kg for the orange and 93 roubles/kg for the apple, also imported. Furthermore, while citrus imports barely maintained their 2015 level, apple imports continued their nosedive, falling below the one-million tonnes mark, i.e. down more than 800 000 t from 2013. It just goes to show how the weakness of some can strengthen others!
