The official reopening of the US market to the Argentinean lemon, awaited since 2002 by Tucumán’s producers, did not take place as planned on 23 January. The Trump administration decided to defer by 60 days (i.e. late March 2017) the entry into force of the agreement, signed in late December 2016 after years of negotiations. Is this a simple delay due to the new administration’s desire to review the agreements signed at the end of the Obama presidency, or a genuine rethink? Opinions are divided. Lobbies for the Californian and Arizonan producers have in any event relaunched their anti-Argentinean lemon offensive under circumstances which are now much more in their favour. The volumes involved are around 15 000 to 20 000 t per year, according to the simulation conducted by APHIS.
