Summer fruits should be in short supply at the beginning of the season, as a result of heavy frosts in late February which affected all the production zones in Southern Europe, more particularly Spain, Italy and France, when the early varieties were already in flower. Hence there should be major losses in the first fortnight of the campaign in Seville, Murcia and Valencia for peaches, nectarines and apricots, whereas the later flat peaches do not seem to have been affected. Losses should also be registered in France, at the very beginning of the season, in the PACA region, in Roussillon and in certain sectors of Rhône-Alpes. The same applies to Italy, where the very first flowers were burned in the south of the country, but also in Emilia-Romagna with in terms of early varieties. There may be summer pear shortages in these countries, but little damage for cherries, plums or seasonal varieties of apricots, peaches and nectarines whose buds were not yet open at this time. More precise info will be presented at the Medfel trade show, to be held this year from 24 to 26 April 2018 in Perpignan.
