Status quo in 2019, but nothing alarming!

The stagnation of avocado consumption at around 610 000 tons in 2019 in EU-28 should not be misinterpreted. It is not demand that is lacking, but clearly supply. Indeed, due to a significant shortfall of fruits during the summer season, which was not offset by the slight increase in supply during the winter season. Major EU markets did react the same way in this context of limited volumes: if France, Germany and Scandinavia followed the overall trend of stagnation, the United Kingdom fell sharply. The weakness of the British Pound continued to weigh on the attractiveness of the second largest consumer of EU-28 market. A good performance is to be highlighted in this mild assessment: the continuation of a strong growth trend in Italy (+5 000 t), a country which count more than 60 million inhabitants and which has still clearly not reached is full consumption potential yet (barely more 400 g / capita). These first trends are to be confirmed, for the customs figures currently available are still provisional.
