Despite ongoing crisis in the sector, Floridian exports regaining some vitality

With 3.8 million boxes, exports across all markets rose by 13 % from 2018-19. Nonetheless, Floridian volumes are a long way from recovering from the successive ravages of Hurricanes Irma (2017-18) and Matthew (2016-17). However, the results on the main markets remain encouraging. On the one hand, the US market registered a distinct increase of 300 000 boxes from the previous season. On the other hand, taking advantage of the absence of Texas, shipments to Europe took a leap forward. The 700 000 boxes received marked a rise of 37 % from 2018-19. However, the Floridian cultivation area is continuing to collapse under the effect of greening. The latest survey reports a loss of nearly one million trees in five years, i.e. more than 20 % of the production potential, according to the 2018 survey.
