Damaging effects of climate change

Open/Close Shop

A team of researchers from the Mayora trial station has shown that the advancement of the flowering period, due to global warming, could have an adverse effect on yield. By starting in early March, i.e. practically three weeks earlier than fifteen years ago, the flowers are exposed to a higher climate risk, and insect pollination is potentially less effective. In addition, the critical flowering period, which largely determines the production level, namely the fourth and last week, is often cold and rainy. Avenues for research are looking at selecting rootstocks delaying the flowering period. Later varieties than Hass, such as Reed, could also see renewed interest.
