Slowdown in planting

Open/Close Shop

After considerable expansion, Spanish watermelon surface areas could finally be treading water, contrary to the initial info announced by the Ministry of Agriculture in late 2019. The fall in rates registered last campaign (- 30 %), due to the increasing supply and to a cold spring, as well as increasing production costs, especially the price of seeds, encouraged caution among operators. So surface areas could be at most stable, contrary to the predicted 16 % increase. Poor weather at the start of the year also deferred planting, and some growers preferred to revert to other crops, such as the courgette. So surface areas could maintain their 2019 level (21 500 ha, with 10 500 ha for Almeria, 3 150 ha for Murcia and 2 800 ha for Castilla La Mancha), i.e. a potential of 1.2 million tonnes.
