The harvest is set to be even further below average than in 2019-20, and indeed the smallest for the past six years. The blame lies with another spring heatwave, following on from the one which occurred in 2019. The orange and lemon are the hardest hit species. This is an additional challenge for the Turkish industry, already affected by its two main markets shrinking in recent campaigns. Hence exports to Russia have dropped, while the political and economic situation in Iraq has caused a collapse in shipments. These two markets, which represented approximately 1.1 million tonnes in 2018-19, i.e. nearly 60 % of the country’s exports, have slumped by approximately 200 000 t in recent years. Nonetheless, the country will have a major asset in terms of competitiveness, with the declining trend in its currency gathering pace since the beginning of 2020 (25 % loss against the euro in one year at the opening of the season).
