Max Havelaar banana sales to grow in France in 2020

With more than 84,100 tonnes of Fairtrade bananas sold in France in 2020, the sector continues to grow, according to the 2020 annual report published by Max Havelaar France.

The success of Fairtrade bananas in the UK, the largest historical market in terms of volume, has been made possible by the commitment of retailers such as Waitrose in 2007, followed by Sainsbury's and The Coop, who have switched their entire supply to 100% Fairtrade. In France, the 3rd largest European market after Germany, Fairtrade bananas have been present since the 2000s, mainly with dual organic certification: 87% of the 84,000 tonnes of Fairtrade bananas marketed in France in 2020 would have dual organic-FT certification. Consumption took off in 2018 thanks to the development of the offer by general retailers such as Carrefour, where 1 banana out of 3 sold is labelled, Intermarché, E. Leclerc and above all, with the switch by Monoprix to 100% of its supply of organic-FT bananas, a first for a general retailer in France. The reference has also managed to break into discount chains where it was absent until the mid-2010s, such as Lidl and Franprix. While in 2020 the dynamism of the sector in France continued to be driven mainly by the commitment of general retailers and by consumers showing a desire to make more responsible purchases, a desire that has been reinforced in the context of the pandemic, the trend seems to be the opposite in Germany.
