Following its detection in April 2021 in half, a hectare located in the district of Querecotillo (Chocan sector), in the department of Piura, right in the heart of the organic banana production basin, the dreaded Fusarium oxiporum cubense (TR4) fungus is gradually spreading.

According to SENASA press releases, 4 nuclei have been detected. Three of them are located along the Chira river valley, in the district of Querecotillo (Santa Rosa and El Mango areas) and in the district of Salitral (El Cortijo area), near the first outbreak discovered in April. The last outbreak is located about 80 km to the south, in the district of Castilla in the San Rafael area. In order to limit the spread of the fungus in this region, which has about 10,000 ha of organic bananas, quarantine measures have already been put in place on the 71.5 ha concerned, which belong to 22 organic banana producers, mainly small producers.
