After the news of the arrival of TR4 in Colombia in 2019, and despite all the efforts made in all producing countries, the slow expansion of the dreaded Fusarium oxisporum cubense (TR4) fungus continues. Unfortunately, since 12 April, Peru has become the second country in the Americas to have made the presence of TR4 official in its territory.

The detection took place on half a hectare located in the heart of the organic banana production zone for export, the so-called "Chocan" zone, in the district of Querecotillo, province of Sullana, department of Piura, the historical cradle of Peruvian organic bananas, which is home to 80% of small producers.

As a reminder, while bananas and plantains are produced on about 170,000 hectares in Peru, the 10,000 ha of organic bananas for export are mainly located on the arid coastal fringe of the north of the country, in the departments of Piura, Tumbes and Lambayeque. Organic bananas are mainly produced by small producers (there are more than 8,000), 80% of whom are Fairtrade certified.

Apart from concerns about the resilience of the Peruvian sector, which has already been losing ground in recent years as a result of more competitive competition on international markets, https://www.fruitrop.com/Contenus-des-newsletters/Deuxieme-annee-de-baisse-des-exportations-en-2020 , the news is particularly worrying for its northern neighbour, Ecuador, whose border is only a hundred kilometres from the Peruvian outbreak and through which a great deal of trade takes place.
