Following an increase in the number of interceptions of Turkish citrus fruits that do not meet EU requirements on pesticide residues, the European Commission has decided to temporarily increase by 20% the frequency of physical checks on citrus imports from Turkey. This measure, effective from 23 November 2021, specifically targets imports of Turkish lemons, oranges and easy-peelers. This decision could result in a decline in Turkish lemon exports to the European Union (20% of total Turkish lemon exports, i.e. 110,000 tonnes in 2020-21) in favour of the two main export markets, namely Eastern Europe (240,000 tonnes in 2020-21) and the Middle East (200,000 tonnes in 2020-21). Nevertheless, the scope of this decision should be limited for the other families of citrus fruits, as the EU represents only a secondary destination for oranges (4% of total Turkish orange exports, i.e. 9,000 tonnes in 2020-21) and for easy-peelers (7% of total Turkish easy-peelers exports, i.e. 67,000 tonnes in 2020-21).
