Who are the leaders in the world fruit trade? Unsurprisingly, with 21.4 million tonnes exported, bananas are crushing the competition, accounting for almost a third of a world trade estimated at just under 70 million tonnes in 2020. Despite being in second and third place, Apples and oranges are far down the ranking, followed by easy peelers and grapes. However, the flow in value terms gives a different perspective: bananas still dominate, but apples lose ground to grapes. Moreover, avocado, only 8th in volume (2.5 million tonnes exported), climbs up to 4th place in the ranking ahead of the orange. The avocado is at the top of the list of markets with the highest growth, as is the cherry, these two products being the only ones to show a level of over 10% per year. Berries are doing almost as well (9.5% per year), but with a more limited volume base. Bananas are the only heavyweight market to emerge in the top 10 fruits in terms of growth (3.1% per year).
