Colombian banana

Fusarium oxysporum cubense tropical race 4 (TR4), detected for the first time in the Americas in Colombia in 2019, had remained confined since its initial detection to the Guajira area, a marginal and isolated production area (relatively far from Magdalena and even further away from the major production basin of Uraba). The last reports indicated a stable affected area of around 190 ha. However, in mid-December 2021 a new outbreak was declared positive, this time in the municipio of 'Zona Bananera' located in the Magdalena region, the 2nd largest export banana producing area in Colombia. With 16,000 ha of bananas for export, the Magdalena region accounts for 31% of the country's area and is mainly made up of small and medium-sized banana producers.
