World Lemon Market

As the conflict in Ukraine drags on and international sanctions isolate Russia from the world economy (exclusion from the SWIFT banking system, lack of foreign currency liquidity and reduced shipping links), Russia appears to be an unsafe destination for southern hemisphere lemon producers. Nevertheless, for Argentina, this situation is synonymous with the loss of its leading export market with 40,000 to 60,000 tonnes exported each year (58,000 t in 2020). For South Africa, the Russian Federation absorbs 9% of total lemon exports, with 40,700 tonnes exported in 2021. Could these volumes put pressure on the EU market? The uncertainties remain because the regulatory standards (quarantine disease, tolerance threshold for pesticide residues) cannot be transposed from the Russian market to the European Union.
