Selling nearly 1 350 000 tonnes in 2021 according to our estimates, the organic banana trade continued its rise worldwide. While 2021 cannot yet be regarded as a normal year, given the ongoing pandemic and its consequences, some trends which had taken shape in 2020 continued, and were even exacerbated, on the main consumer markets: the USA, which takes in 40 % of world volumes, and the EU27+UK (60 %). Growth was still there in both these markets, which is very good news. However, the disparities noted in 2020 in the consumption dynamic seem to have been magnified. In the USA, there was still very decent growth (+ 5 % on 2020), with the organic banana remaining the driving force for sales in the organic fruit and vegetable section. Conversely, in Europe, which also registered some growth in consumption (+ 2 % in 2020), sales continued to decelerate, with great disparities observed between European countries: in 2021 some big markets maintained good vitality, stimulated by low price strategies, while in other historic consumer countries, the market was stagnant. This is a consequence of the consolidation of certain consumption trends which were triggered by the arrival of the pandemic in 2020.
