After an upward dynamic over the past decade, European plantain banana imports in 2022 bucked the trend. After reaching more than 152 000 tonnes in 2021, they registered a significant fall of 13 % in 2022, to just 133 213 tonnes. Colombia, the EC market’s top supplier, suffered record rainfall in the production zones, causing a significant production drop. Hence Colombian exports to the EU27+UK in 2022 were down by 21 % to 78 112 tonnes. Ecuador, the European market’s number two supplier, continued its rise with volumes reaching nearly 45 000 tonnes in 2022, though this was insufficient to offset the Colombian supply shortage. In this context of shortfall wholesale market prices, mainly stable at around €1/kg, saw a big increase, especially during the second half, which pushed up the annual average to €1.62/kg, i.e. a performance 60 % better than in 2021.
