Japan really is the country with a Zen banana market, with 2015 bringing no shifts. Consumption rose by a few tens of grams per capita to 7.6 kg, largely due to the depopulation trend (approximately 100 000 people fewer per year). This is nonetheless an extremely low level, the lowest since 2002.
Imports were stable (+ 1 % to 960 000 tonnes). The only noteworthy development was the 6 % drop from its historic and monopolistic source, the Philippines. The small gap was quickly seized on by Ecuador (the no. 2 supplier), which doubled its presence (+ 52 000 tonnes), as did Guatemala (+ 7 400 tonnes).
