The USA is definitely no longer the stuff of dreams for banana analysts

In the banana world, the US market is a picture of orchestrated banality, with both prices and volumes seeing barely any change year after year. January 2016 (see FruiTrop no.238, page 80) saw strong import prices with the same level as in 2014, at 16.7 USD/box (spot), and retail prices down slightly by 3 %. In terms of volume, the 2014 levels practically repeated themselves in 2015. Imports rose by just 1 % to 4.6 million tonnes, while re-exports (practically exclusively to Canada) increased by 2 % to 550 000 tonnes, giving a net consumption of just over 4 million tonnes at 4 059 478 tonnes exactly. The very slight population increase (+2.5 million people up to 325 million inhabitants) led to a stable consumption of 12.5 kg/capita/year. Compared to the average European consumption, this was another fine performance, with the average American purchasing 1 kg more bananas per year.

The highlight of this year, since one needs to be found, lies in Costa Rica’s decline. It ceded its place as the no.2 supplier to Ecuador, in a near-perfect rise and fall. Colombia dropped back too, but more significantly (-18 % from 2014). In 2015 Colombia and Ecuador favoured the EU with their trade volumes. Guatemala, the no.1 supplier, continued its offensive with 4 % growth and a market share rising to 37 %. Honduras and Mexico also bettered the market trend, with growth rates of 10 % and 18 % respectively.

US Customs has for the past two years provided data on certified organic banana imports, some of which must doubtless be re-exported to Canada. In 2015, organic imports reached 320 000 tonnes (7 % of imports), as opposed to 208 000 tonnes in 2014 (5 %).

In terms of supply rate, the United States is also the world number one in terms of stability. In 2015, consumption did not even vary by 1 % month to month. The average monthly consumption in 2015 was 338 000 tonnes, with 17 000 tonnes more or less depending on the month. In 2014, the figure was 337 000 tonnes. This is a well-oiled market, based on a few big firms and structured by massive or even exclusive use of upstream-downstream contracts. Such is the magic of liberalism, as correctly understood by a few.
