Romania is the European Union’s number nine banana consumption market, and the second biggest in Eastern Europe after Poland. Banana consumption boomed after the collapse of the Eastern Bloc, and in particular after the country entered the EU in 2007. Consumption volumes more than doubled within a decade, thanks on the one hand to the improvement in living standards, and on the other hand to the rapid modernisation of the distribution sector, with in particular international chains establishing a presence. However, the market is still highly traditional, in terms of both segmentation and certification, which are very limited, and its commercial practices, based on spot transactions with weekly or even daily price listings. While direct imports are starting to make progress, at present they remain anecdotal, with most of the volumes imported from Western Europe. The presence of the Black Sea port of Constanta could be an asset, and enable Romania to eventually become a hub for other Central and East European countries, though the currently outdated infrastructures (port, rail and road) and the paucity of volumes are hampering any potential take-off.
