From one extreme to the other

The overall supply gradually waned in June, going from 3 to 2 million boxes between the beginning and end of the month. Cumulative volumes were 17 % below average. This spectacular fall, to say the least, is a consequence of several factors. On the one hand, although South Africa was still at peak production, volumes remained in shortfall, with incoming shipments still 20 % lower than last year. On the other hand, because of the strong pull from the US market, Peruvian volumes bound for the EU were considerably lighter, with 29 % less than in 2018.

In this context the market started to tighten and stocks of small sizes (22, 24) registered at the beginning of the month were completely cleared up. Indeed, thanks to the change in Peruvian production zones, larger sizes came in, which helped restore the balance from mid-June. Thereafter, overall incoming shipments shrank considerably, which caused a surge in prices back to near-average levels (+ 1 %).

The green varieties market was mainly supplied by South Africa, followed by Peru and Kenya. Total volumes were 38 % above average. Prices increased gradually, albeit remaining 2 % below average.
