Summer slowdown setting in gradually

The overall supply remained moderate, although a slight increase from June was observed. As regards the dollar banana, Costa Rica remained down from 2018, with incoming shipments disrupted by nationwide social movements. After its dip in June, the Ecuadorian supply returned to slightly above-average levels. From week 27, Colombian exports to the EU also embarked on their seasonal increase, with cumulative volumes for the month 5 % above average. The African supply also proved to be above average (+ 5 %), despite the chronic shortfall from Cameroon (- 15 %). Although Ivorian exports remained stable from June (seasonal fall), cumulative volumes were 18 % above average. The Ghanaian supply continued to gain ground, with levels well above average (+ 37 %). Furthermore, the beginning of the school holidays and heatwaves, mainly in Western Europe, greatly contributed to slowing down demand right across the European market. In this context sales continued to decelerate throughout the month, falling into a depressed state from week 30. Prices followed the same trend, though they did remain slightly above average (+ 10 %).
