European market moving off smoothly

The Ecuadorian supply to the EC market was well below average, because of a trading policy favouring other markets, and the traditional seasonal fall. Hence although Colombian exports progressed with above-average levels (+ 7 %), and Costa Rica followed the same trend, the dollar supply remained moderate in September. Although incoming Cameroonian shipments maintained a big shortfall for a variety of reasons (socio-political and agronomic problems), the African supply was slightly bigger than in previous years (+ 5 %), because of the rise from Côte d’Ivoire (+ 8 %) and Ghana (+ 36 %). A slight reduction in French West Indies volumes could be observed, with levels still well below average. Hence despite the seasonal increase from various origins, the overall supply remained moderate. Things got moving again thanks to the promotions implemented across the European markets from the start of the new school year. Hence sales regained more dynamic levels, enabling an increase in green banana prices (5 % above average).

In Spain, because of the reduction in Canaries platano volumes, prices started to soar from week 37.
