Under pressure from heavy volumes from Brazil

In June, the European mango market was primarily supplied by West Africa (Côte d’Ivoire, Mali, Burkina Faso and Guinea), with volumes gradually dwindling. The closure of the export campaign in Côte d’Ivoire in late May was only gradually perceptible on the European markets, given the delay due to sea-freight transport times. The last batches were received in the third week of June. In parallel, Brazil maintained a big presence, with substantial shipments, relatively unusual at this time of year. Additional batches from Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic further swelled the market. The influx of merchandise, while demand was in decline and rather switching toward seasonal fruits, led to a low point in sales conditions. In addition, some batches of mediocre quality weighed heavily on the transactions and traded at low prices, often being placed “on commission” on the wholesale markets. Puerto Rican and Dominican Keitt struggled to find outlets in the supermarket sector, given the stiff competition from West African Kent available at attractive prices. The pressure from incoming Brazilian shipments in Northern Europe further intensified the sluggishness of the market. Finally, Senegal, which began its campaign early with produce from Casamance, also struggled to earn value for its first shipments. Sales conditions seemed to improve slightly at the end of the month due to the ebb in West African mangos. June 2019 contrasted strongly with the same month in 2018, which saw a drop in volumes available, and thereby rates otherwise more favourable.

The air-freight mango market had a less troubled June. The cessation of shipments from West African origins from late May limited volumes available on the market. Those batches remaining sold fairly steadily. The switch from the West African campaigns to the Mexican campaign went rather smoothly. However, the progress in incoming shipments from Mexico in the second half of the month led to a drop in rates, with some sales from 3.50 euros/kg.
