Mediocre market conditions

The European mango market saw very mediocre conditions in October, carrying on from those seen in late September. The accumulation of tonnages from the end of the Israeli campaign, plus the high tempo of shipments from Brazil and Spain, led to an over-supply, which was especially marked since demand remained moderate throughout the period. The withdrawal of Israel in the first half of the month did not have any effect on overall supply level, insofar as it was readily offset by substantial shipments from Spain and Brazil. The uneven quality of Brazilian produce, out of storage or otherwise, and the predominance of less prized varieties only aggravated the sluggishness of the market. Rates remained fairly low throughout the month. In this context the limited Brazilian Kent volumes barely earned any value. Over the last two weeks of the month, the market profile gradually altered. The fall in Spanish Osteen shipments left the way free for Brazilian fruit, whose prices took an upturn at the end of the month. Spain continued its campaign with Keitt, albeit in distinctly smaller quantities.

After a fairly competitive start to the period, the air-freight market did better thereafter. At the beginning of the month, some Israeli Shelly batches were trading at between 3.80 and 4.00 euros/kg. Over the following weeks, the market was supplied primarily by Spain and Brazil for Kent, as well as by some Egyptian batches. The commercial pressure faded in the second part of the month, due to the lack of Spanish shipments, and moderate imports from Brazil. At the end of the month, the paucity of Brazilian shipments revitalised prices, with levels of up to 6.00 euros/kg, while the first incoming shipments from Peru were just taking shape.
