Peru on the march

In February, the European mango market was characterised by a massive flow from Peru, which really dominated the supply. In a context of stable demand, the volumes on the market sold slowly, favouring the formation of stocks. Their rates settled at an average of 4.00-5.00 euros/box, though certain sales were made at lower prices. Hitherto mainly comprising small sizes, the Peruvian supply re-balanced, with large sizes gradually coming to dominate the volumes entering the market. This change in sizing was accompanied by a pricing modification. Bit by bit, rates for small sizes recovered, while the rates for large sizes ebbed. Meanwhile, Brazilian mango shipments continued with Tommy Atkins, Palmer and Keitt, at prices more or less similar to Peruvian produce. They were more aimed at the North European markets.

The air-freight market had a saturated and tough start to the month. Some sales made at below market rates disrupted transactions. The influx of merchandise via other European Union countries was one of the causes for the more swollen market conditions. In the second half of the month, the change in the harvest zone (from the Piura region to Casma) led to a dip in shipments, and enabled prices to recover slightly. The rate settled at above 4.00 euros/kg, with peaks of up to 5.00 euros/kg for higher quality merchandise, and in the most popular sizes.
