EU27+UK imports review

The customs figures from April enable us to draw a nearly definitive review of the 2020-21 winter season for the EU27+UK. A new record supply level was set, in excess of 360 000 tonnes. Growth was approximately 10 000 t, below the previous season’s exceptional level. This slowdown was due mainly to production vagaries, with in particular Chile taking a major hit, which pushed the country back from first to third place in the supplier rankings. Similarly, Mediterranean exporters were in poor form (unfavourable weather and/or alternate bearing effect), though Morocco did repeat its record from 2019-20, with more than 32 000 t. Two South American suppliers continued their exceptional upward tempos, symptomatic of the massive expansion of their cultivation area: Mexico, the first origin to pass the symbolic 100 000-t mark, and Colombia, whose imports practically doubled (more than 64 000 t, as opposed to 35 800 t in 2019-20 for the September-April period alone, which encompasses the main bloom). Regarding the outsiders, the Dominican Republic was close to 14 000 t, while Portugal more than doubled its shipments, nearing 6 000 t (September to April period).
