A particularly difficult market in May

The sea-freight mango market had a particularly difficult May. The extension of the Peruvian sea-freight campaign, or at least the ongoing availability of stocks, supplied the market until the second half of the month. This supply was especially surprising since the Peru had been set for a smaller campaign. A faster end to the Peruvian campaign’s shipments pointed to a more harmonious transition to the West African campaign. Yet this did not come to pass, insofar as Brazil offset the Peruvian withdrawal in this transitional period. Hence the slightly earlier Ivorian campaign clashed with volumes from the Latin American origins. The fairly quick start to Ivorian and Malian exports, at more modest levels, contributed to market congestion, causing a fall in rates that varied between the origins. The Dominican Republic also started its campaign earlier than in previous years, augmenting the market overload. In addition to the massive volumes accumulated in this way, the varietal and qualitative diversity of the products aggravated the difficulty selling the merchandise. All this came in a context of demand slowdown, with increasing interest in seasonal products.

The air-freight mango market had a better time of it. Peruvian exports continued until the end of the month, with decreasing quantities but high prices. The Ivorian air-freight campaign extended throughout May, obtaining fairly stable prices, though lower than for Peruvian products. The middle of the month brought the start of the Mexican campaign, which operated on the same price footing as for Peruvian mangos. Conversely, Malian and Burkinese mangos struggled to find a market foothold in this competitive context. This can probably be explained by the relative lack of homogeneity in their fruit.
