Mango monthly review: October 2021

October was characterised by a heavy mango market, due to demand not really being focused on tropical products, and a large supply. Brazil and Spain provided an abundant supply with fruit of different varieties. The significant progress of Spanish Osteen shipments saturated the market, showing little demand, which led to prices dropping and difficulties selling. The Spanish Osteen shipments peak this year came in weeks 40 and 41. Quantities gradually shrank thereafter, though they remained present on the market. Their prices strengthened as the supply subsided. In the second half of the month, the first Keitt shipments partially offset the fall in Osteen volumes. Spain was also providing Kent shipments, which sold at around €5.00/kg for the most coloured fruit, and from €3.50/kg for more standard quality fruit. At the end of the month, the quality of Kent weakened considerably, leading to lower prices being charged. The Spanish supply was topped up by Irwin mangos, in more limited quantities. Brazilian Keitt sold on a downward footing, given the competition from Spanish fruit, but also due to the predominance of large sizes, less sought-after by the big supermarket chains selling individual mangos in their stores. The Brazilian supply also included Kent, in smaller quantities. They earned better value, at around €5.00-€6.00/box in the first half of October, down to €4.00-€5.00/box in the second half of the month.

The air-freight mango market remained more lively in October, with regular shipments from Brazil. Kent prices from this origin slumped in the second half of the month, as the first Peruvian mangos appeared, particularly early this year. The Peruvian mangos traded at high prices because of their good presentation, but also the air-freight prices. While the good-quality Brazilian and Peruvian mangos sold smoothly, lower-quality fruit suffered some degree of downrating.
