Peruvian avocado

After a record 2020, Peru is already set for a heavily laden 2021 avocado season, according to the initial estimates. The entry into production of 3 000 new hectares of orchards will weigh heavily on the balance. Peru’s production potential should be 15 % higher than in 2020. The first significant shipments from the early Olmos region are expected from mid-March/late March. Meanwhile, after a small campaign the previous year, South Africa should bounce back with volumes 6 % bigger than in 2020 (2 % below the 2-year average). Exporters must resist the temptation of the under-supply and probably very high prices in March and April, and not start their export campaign too soon. Marketing immature fruit would have disastrous consequences on consumption, which should express its full potential this season, given the expected volumes from the two main market protagonists.
