Costa Rican pineapple

The recovery in exports is confirmed for Costa Rican pineapple in 2021. After the sharp decline recorded during 2020, 2021 marks the origin's return to the international markets with a 12%/2020 increase and levels close to the 2018 record. Supply in the USA, the main destination for Costa Rican exports, is up by 10% and even shows a record for imports, higher than the last record in 2018. While in the EU-27 + UK, the increase is also there (+11% / 2020), imports have not yet recovered the levels of the pre-pandemic years 2019 or 2018. Finally, it is important to note the marked development in other destinations where imports have progressed by 28% compared to the last year and by 20% compared to the three-year average. Two main areas stand out and are pulling the trend upwards: The Middle East and Eastern Europe, where respective imports have progressed by almost 30% over the three-year average. On the other hand, uncertainties persist in the Russian-Ukrainian market, which in 2021 absorbed nearly 60,000 tonnes of Costa Rican pineapple. With the conflict in Ukraine getting bogged down and international sanctions increasingly isolating Russia from the world economy (exclusion from the SWIFT banking system, lack of liquidity in foreign currencies and reduction of maritime links), Russia appears to be an unsafe destination for producers and could put an end to the strong growth dynamic observed over the last 10 years.
