European banana market - Consumption

Data for March 2022 are only partially available. For the EU27+UK we will remain with the 1st quarter of 2022.

The European market supply (EU27+UK) fell in February with a decline of 8% to 481,000 tonnes. The decline is very marked for Dollar bananas with a fall of 10% as is the case for European supply.

On the ACP side, it should be noted that, unlike the other origins, there has been an increase, albeit a moderate one, with a growth rate of 1.8% for Africa and 0.5% for the other ACP suppliers.

The balance sheet for the first quarter also shows a market in contraction, of the order of 2.4% to 1 047 000 tonnes. Here again, the Dollar group and European production are weighing on the downward trend. All Dollar origins except Costa Rica and Guatemala show a negative growth rate of 6 to 12%. On the other hand, the ACP group is performing very well, with a growth of 6.4% for Africa and 4% for the other ACP countries. Cameroon, Belize and Ghana are leading the upward trend, while the Dominican Republic and Côte d'Ivoire are down by 2 to 5% respectively. Over 12 months, consumption is stable at 6 million tonnes thanks to ACP and European production.
