Chilli pepper

The chilli pepper market was uneven and changeable. Martinique and Guadeloupe shipped irregular quantities of variable quality, above all of produce from Martinique. These origins topped up the shipments from the Dominican Republic, traditionally the dominant supplier at this time of year. Air-freight capacity problems, but also phytosanitary problems, heavily disrupted the supply from this origin, causing a product shortfall in the face of stable demand. Mexico came in from April to mid-May to make up for the paucity and irregularity of Dominican shipments. This produce frequently sold at above €10.00/kg. From mid-May, the market altered with the arrival of European and Mediterranean fruit. The increased availability, as well as the lower cost prices (road-freight) caused prices to drop below €10.00/kg. The more marked commercial pressure due to increased competition led to a wider price range, according to the fruit provenance and quality. Prices dropped more steeply at the end of the period, because of the dwindling demand.

Plantain banana

The plantain banana coped with Q2 2022 fairly well. The small air-freight shipments from Martinique sold steadily, albeit with a slight downward trend at the end of the period. Production for shipment to Mainland France seems to have progressed to outstrip the demand level. The influx of produce, which was in addition more expensive due to air-freight costs, led to more difficult sales and a slump in rates, from €3.00/kg at the start of the period to €2.65/kg in late June. The supply was dominated by sea-freight Colombian and Ecuadorian fruit. Prices remained fairly stable in April, before falling in the first half of May. Larger shipments in the face of stable demand resulted in stocks forming. The advancing fruit maturity led to sales at low prices in May (less than €0.50/kg for highly mature fruit). The scaled-back shipments in the second half of May helped rates strengthen, before taking another downturn in June. Nonetheless, we can note that the median rate for plantain bananas over this period maintained a decent level, avoiding market depressions caused by influxes of merchandise from Colombia.

Chayote and christophine

The market was fairly high for Costa Rican chayotes and christophines, available in more limited quantities, like the eddoe and cassava. Chayote prices gradually strengthened in April and May. In late May-early June, shipments expanded and once again weighed down on sales prices. The narrower christophines market stood firm, with a few price variations in June according to supply levels and fruit quality.
