Peach and nectarine forecasts 2022

With just under 2,270,000 tonnes of peaches, flat peaches and nectarines, European production should be 15% higher than in 2021 but -19% lower than the 2016/2020 average. For pavie peaches, mainly intended for the industry, production should barely exceed 600,000 tonnes, i.e. a drop of -7% compared to 2021 and -21% on the five-year average. In 2022, even though frost affected some production basins at the end of March and beginning of April, the damage remained limited in Greece, France and Italy. On the other hand, Spain was particularly affected, especially in the northern regions such as Aragon and Catalonia.

In more detail;

In France, the production of nectarine peaches will be close to its potential, barring climatic accidents, and is a week ahead of schedule, with the first crops arriving this week. Little impacted by the cold snap that affected many European regions, French production has stabilised at 200,000 tonnes and is back to levels close to its potential, i.e. an increase of 20% over one year and a decrease of -1% on the five-year average.

In Italy, production returned to normal levels. Flowering and fruit sets were good in all production regions. Supply will reach 470,000 tonnes for peaches, 537,000 tonnes for nectarines and 75,000 tonnes for Pavie.

In Spain, peach and nectarine production, including flat peaches, is forecast to fall by 31% to 715,000 tonnes, i.e. a fall of 59,000 tonnes affecting all production regions and a fall of 50% on the five-year average. This drop is linked to the Ciril storm that crossed all of Spain at the beginning of April, a climatic phenomenon not seen for 42 years. The Ebro valley was particularly affected, as was Aragon.

In Greece, production will reach 353,000 tonnes of peaches and nectarines, an increase of 120% compared to 2021 and a decrease of 12% on the five-year average. Peaches are expected to reach 350,000 tonnes, up +38% year-on-year and -12% compared to the five-year average.
